Although it’s probably the last thing you feel like doing after being involved in a car accident, by following a checklist you may help your claim against your Pennsylvania car insurance policy to be processed much faster and more efficiently. Try printing it out and keeping it in your car where it may be accessed easily.

  • Stay calm. Your passengers may be relying on you for reassurance, so stay as calm as possible and don’t succumb to anger under any circumstances.
  • Injuries. Telephone for an ambulance if necessary.
  • Telephone the police. Regardless of how minor the accident may appear, it’s important an official police report is made when there is vehicle damage or injury.
  • License details. Politely request to see the other driver’s license and record the relevant details. Make a note of the vehicle license plate number.
  • Photographs. Fortunately, many cell phones now have a built in camera; use it to photograph the damage to all vehicles involved.
  • Protect the scene. Only move the vehicles involved in the accident if absolutely necessary and if safe to do so. Once the police arrive tell them exactly what occurred and then follow their instructions.

Your record of the accident may also help your accuracy when you file a claim against your Pennsylvania car insurance. Of course, only consider following your checklist if it is completely safe to do so. The circumstances of a serious accident may mean that you need to leave everything in the hands of emergency services.
