New York winters may be harsh and brutal so it’s important to ensure your car is as prepared as possible for coping with winter hazards. It’s also a smart idea to double check your New York insurance policy for your car to ensure it still offers the most appropriate coverage.

Always keep essential emergency supplies in your vehicle in case you get stuck or stranded somewhere. Jumper cables, water, flashlight, wheel wrench and wheel jack, first aid kit, blankets and warm clothing are all potentially useful things you should carry in your car. Include a large box of cat litter if you have room, as many granulated varieties may be used to increase tire traction if you get stuck.

Avoid patches of ice where possible and slow down if they are unavoidable. In the event your car starts to slide on the ice, motorists are generally advised to use the brake sparingly and very gently while turning the steering wheel into the skid. Sharp braking and steering is likely to make matters worse.

Sometimes bad weather is unexpected but keeping your radio on and tuned into a weather station is probably still the best way to stay apprised of deteriorating weather conditions. Listen for road closures and detours as well as other potential hazards.

A quality global positioning system or GPS may not only prevent you from getting lost but may be invaluable in showing you how to get back on to familiar roads after a detour. Don’t forget to contact your New York insurance agent to check if your auto insurance policy has enough coverage to provide for repair or replacement due to encountering a winter road hazard.
